Fun at the Infants' Sports Day
Karting - National Sprint Championships

On Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th July the school karting team competed in the National Sprint Championships held at Whilton Mill near Daventry. All of the competitors drove really well and the competition was very tough. Congratulations go to Beth Cowley who came 3rd in Class 11 and to Abi Whitt who came 6th in Class 7.
Sports Day Awards
The points have been counted and verified and the results are out! All the Sports and Athletics Awards and Trophies were given out this week, including House Trophies. The overall winning house for Summer Sports Day was Teresa, while the winner of the Winter House Matches was Agnes. The highest point scorers in each Year were Laura Hayes for Year 7, Laura Simes for Year 8, Rhian Mullis for Year 9 and Frankie Hayes for Year 10. Well done everyone!

Staff vs Vl Form Rounder’s Match
As the end of term draws near the fun and games begin as we look towards the Summer Holiday. VI Form Students arranged a Staff vs Vl Form Rounder’s game which brought out a competitive streak in all! The lunch time game was enjoyed by everyone who took part, enthusiastically supported by the spectators. It was a close call with the final score, 15 – 17, the staff graciously allowing the students to claim victory.
Visit to Lincoln Castle and Cathedral
Year 7 Students visited Lincoln Castle and Cathedral this month, a trip that was enjoyed by all! ‘It was the first time I’d seen Lincoln Cathedral and the beauty of it blew me away. I loved the sound of the big organ – it was brilliant. It had a lovely atmosphere and I much enjoyed the whole trip.’ (Bethany Green) The students enjoyed a guided tour of the Cathedral and, in the Castle, saw how skilled craftsmen had created wonderful stone and wood carvings - and how builders of the time had to work in many dangerous conditions.
Fashion from Around the World!
Year 9 students created and presented a wonderful multicultural fashion show, this term. Students took to the stage, in clothes from different themes including wear for Sleep, Beach, Funky and Evenings.
The students also described what they were wearing in German, Italian, French and English for their audience from the Junior School. The show was a great way to help the girls enjoy languages and, especially, to practice speaking.

Induction Day
This term we welcomed our new Year 7’s into the Senior School. Current Year 6 students, together with all the new girls joining from other schools, came into the Senior School for a taste of what life would be like next year. The girls met their Year 8 “Buddies” and were paired up with their Sixth Form “Mums”. These friends will help our newcomers settle in to OLCS. The girls enjoyed cooking, swimming, and took a tour of OLCS with Mr Henry. We look forward to seeing all again in September!

Duke of Edinburgh Final Weekend - Bronze
27 girls took part in their final expedition this term, to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. The weekend, spent in Derbyshire, was enjoyable for all, especially the sunshine!
The students have worked very hard through the year and completion is a major achievement – with many now moving up to the Silver Awards. Thanks also to the staff who give up so much time to support the various expeditions and training.

Creation Station for Toddlers and Parents now at OLCS

OLCS is now the new location for the Interactive Creation Station sessions. Every Tuesday morning, children aged 1-5, bring their mums and dads along to join these arts and craft classes.
The fun classes allow children to enjoy a structured programme of messy play, in a safe and friendly environment, without any stress or mess at home. The session includes songs, music and imagination as well as plenty of chances to enjoy hands-on practical work.
Rachel Sykes leads the sessions and says that “Creation Station is the UK’s award winning provider of kid’s fun arts and crafts activities. Classes are open to all children aged 1 to 5 and aim to nurture your child's imagination, and keep things relaxed and stress free for you”.

School Assembly with Father Michael Hill

On Wednesday 29th June, in our school assembly, a Rosminian priest named Father Michael Hill came in and gave us a special talk about his time in New Zealand. Father Michael was the headmaster at his school in New Zealand, and he spent forty years there! He told us about the country, its natural beauty, its culture, the people that he met and traditions he learnt and he also told us about the history of New Zealand, the ancient tribes.
He performed a special Maori greeting for us. The Maori greeting is part of the Hongi culture and is where they touch noses by way of greeting. We received a beautiful Rosminian blessing and prayer at the end of the assembly.
We all wondered, what inspired him to go to New Zealand in the first place?
He told us that he was inspired to go to New Zealand because while he was teaching in England, his religious superior informed him that he was to go to New Zealand and went in obedience. This is a vow that a Rosminian takes at Ordination. This story relates to Jesus, when he called the fishermen on Lake Galilee and his disciples responded to him at once! Also Father Michael bought Father Giles with him to visit us at OLCS. Father Michael Hill taught Father Simon Giles, who in turn taught our own teacher, Mr Gallagher!
So this proves that Rosminian education really works!

U15 Netball Team 2nd in Tournament
The U15 Netball team played in the Charnwood Netball tournament on Monday evening at Ashby School. They drew two games against Ashby and Hind Leys and won two games against Burleigh and De Lisle. We were unlucky not to of won the tournament, finishing 2nd overall following an excellent performance. Well done.
Teresa Day
This year it was decided the house days would be celebrated and all girls would have the chance to promote their house and Saint. Teresa Day was the first to come around. With Miss Joss being the new House Head she was enthusiastic to lead the way and participate fully. Emily Cox helped shop for Green Balloons, Cakes were made to sell, with a big thank you going to Bryony Haggart for her wonderful ‘tree’ cake and Hannah Webster created a master piece in assembly. The junior’s were invited and fully participated in an active and jam packed assembly which included Cheerleading, mastermind, singing and reflection time. The cakes were sold and the house raised £96.01 this money was donated to Ashmount School who are using the money to improve their outdoor facilities.
Building Project started by Infants!
After their Assembly, lead by Mrs Hawley, three of our Reception children were very busy. The assembly was based on the parable (Matthew 7) of the wise man who built a house on strong, stone foundations and the foolish man who built on sand. Taking this message, the girls used building blocks to create a wonderful house on very strong foundations. Lottie, Sofia and Lucie worked together as a team and achieved a fantastic result!

Bike 4 Life
Year 6 students took part in the Bike4Life cycling proficiency course. The students learned about road safety and how to look after their bikes. The first day gave a good basic training, including plenty of practice in the playgrounds. The next day saw the pupils take to the roads under close supervision. Here they were able to practise their manoeuvres and reinforce the safe way to cycle on roads. The course was fun for everybody as well as establishing very important and valuable life skills. The weather was an added bonus, the staff and girls certainly enjoyed being out in the glorious sunshine!

Trip to the Quarry!
Year 3 visited Mountsorrel Quarry to support their science topic, Rocks and Soil this term. We stood at the viewing platform and looked down into the huge quarry. It had 10 benches (layers of granite) and has 25 years of quarrying left.
We were able to climb into one of the loaders which were huge. We went to see the enormous crusher. It was very noisy and crushed huge lumps of granite into smaller, even sized pieces.

Rosmini Celebration Mass at Grace Dieu
On Tuesday 15th June the Rosminian Family gathered at Grace Dieu to inaugurate a new Province of the order under the patronage of Father Gentili. He, himself was a member of the Institute of Charity which was founded by Father Antonio Rosmini in 1829.
We; Mrs Hawley, Mr Gallagher, and a group of five students joined the school’s Rosminian sisters under the leadership of Sister Antonietta to celebrate the occasion with the rest of the Rosminian community.
The celebratory mass was followed by a meal in the beautiful grounds of Grace Dieu and a tour of the Priory. This gave us and the sisters a chance to meet fellow Rosminians from across the world from a variety of countries including Wales, Ireland, USA and even New Zealand.
The day gave us a sense of the world wide community with which the Sisters, and the schools is a part of, creating a larger sense of unity. We were even lucky enough to meet the head of the Rosminian Siters; Sister Lucina Provincial, stopping for a quick chat and a picture.

Bardonecchia 2010
On 27th April at 2pm, a group of 17 girls, including myself and 3 teachers: Miss Joss, Mrs Lewis and Mrs Adley, all met at East Midlands airport. We were going to the Bardonecchia ski resort in Italy, for a week of skiing. After a lot a bag shuffling and moving clothes into different cases and hugs and kisses from parents, we finally boarded our flight. Not all of us enjoyed the flight as much as others and we were quite relieved to feel the ground beneath our feet. We then had an hour and a half coach journey to the hotel. We arrived at 10pm and we were all starving. After having a light dinner we went to bed, exhausted from a day of travelling but looking forward to a week of skiing.
The next morning we got our skis and boots fitted. Every day, apart from the last day, we did two hours skiing in the morning and two hours skiing in the afternoon. We were split into different groups and got to meet new people and make new friends. The weather was generally pleasant apart from the day when we skied in a snow storm, which to say the least was interesting… and a bit scary!

Near the end of the week we had a disco, which being girls, we all glammed up for! (partly due to the fact that there were rumours of cute Italian boys being there!) We also had a film night, and a quiz night with a school from London. Some evenings we got to visit the beautiful town of Bardonecchia and explore the shops. On the Friday, our last day of skiing, we received a certificate from our instructors, telling us how well we’d done. Some people also received a medal for skiing super fast down the slalom. That evening we had a karaoke night, where the most talented of us took to the microphone and gave us a lovely sing–song.
After spending a day in the town of Bardonecchia on Saturday we boarded our flight back to England. When we arrived at the English airport we were all ready to go home! I, along with all the others on the trip, would like to thank all the teachers for giving us this opportunity. We all really enjoyed it and were very sad to see it end! It truly was a fantastic week J
